Term paper topic: New media and healthcare industry

My research topic for this course is the role of new media in the healthcare industry. I am interested in a career in the healthcare sector and hope to learn more about new practices in the industry involving new media.

New media is changing every industry but the way it is affecting the healthcare industry is both good and bad. I will therefore be using the “Analysis” approach for my research paper, which compares positive and negative aspects of a topic. 

New media can be good for the industry in many ways. For example, the doctor-patient relationship can be helped by video-calling or live-chats. Also, patients can find doctors and learn about them through social networks or sites for the healthcare community. Doctors can also connect with other doctors and collaborate on research through blogs, crowdsourcing sites and professional networks. Apps that are provided by new media are really helpful to the healthcare industry because they help store and share patient information with hospitals and other healthcare providers. In general, the new media helps the healthcare industry to grow and improve their services.

On the other hand, the new media introduces risks to healthcare industry. For example, patient information is highly confidential, since it includes health history and sensitive information. Keeping it safe and protected is difficult, especially when the new media is able to be hacked and patient information can be leaked through weak networks. New media invites problems for privacy in many ways. Patients can also abuse new media services and give healthcare providers a bad reputation or damage their name. Furthermore, the lack of professional communication styles in the new media can lead to misunderstandings, inadequate services provided and maybe poor health in patients.

New media is a mixed bag for the healthcare industry. It creates challenges and opportunities. I will explore these issues further in my research paper.

    Hi Aye! I think this is a great topic for your research paper! My mom works in the healthcare sector, so she definitely sees the changes due to new media. I think something negative about this could be that people may self-diagnose themselves and cause more harm. You made some really great points that I completely agree with. Great topic!

Advice

Baruch College can use new media to improve the college in many different ways. Firstly, I would like to update and make some changes to the “Academic Calendar”. The calendar should provide the general registration date for “all students,” so that students will be able to plan ahead. Even sending out the semester calendar for students at the very beginning of the semester will help them plan ahead. Secondly, I’ll like to suggest that Baruch make changes to the login information, like “user ID and user Password” for the library, the computers at campus, and the campus Wi-Fi. Baruch “suggests” students and faculties to use the same format to access these facilities. For example: the user name is “first name initial. last name”   (j.thomas), and the password is “yyMmmdd + last 4 digit social number” (02Nov911234).
